Easter Basket-in-the-making

Mrs. Doeleman's Easter basket activity
We used to make these every year in my 2nd grade class for Easter celebration. It was always fun walking around helping the kiddos. I thought it would be nice to put it in my old blog memory bank. Plus they produce slightly smaller baskets and that will help limit the boys Easter treats.
I had to go buy yarn that was more appealing to the boys.

I demonstrated for the boys how to make one...(need to get more containers before they start theirs)
Using a washed out cottage cheese container I cut 5 slits (or more as long as it's an odd number).
Tied a small knot at one end of the yarn and slid the knot down on the inside of one of the slits
 (if that makes sense).
Once it was secure I just started weaving it around (outside/inside/outside/inside) pushing it down and slightly pulling the slack as I went.
 What it looks like inside!
As you keep going it gets a little harder for the kiddos towards to top.
What it looks like on the side, once finished.
 Inside of finished...
I know we would add handles, I can't recall if we stapled them or tied them. I believe we used felt strips though.
I like the baskets without handles and just some colorful "grass".
Again, it is just a fun little activity for the kids that they can add their own flare and ideas to it.

In my classroom I know we would also use different colored yarn halfway up if someone wanted yellow and pink basket versus the multicolored yarn.

And there it is for future enjoyment!
Another nifty idea passed down from the great mind of Mrs. Doeleman.
