Obstacle Course Racing 2019

Brent and I have been trying to find some fun things we can do as a couple. Things that we both enjoy and that we can share. The two most recent things that we are doing together are obstacle course races and hunting.

Now I know that these two things are things that Brent already does and enjoys, we have tried to do new things (baking, bowling league, hiking...) and we were not really both enjoying them. So instead,  I will be trying to do some things that Brent loves.

The first OCR that we signed up for was the Rugged Maniac. We were joined by Jen and Max. Yay siblings! We got there early, as we were going to be volunteering and then running.

After getting checked in and donning our new volunteer shirts, we headed over to our station...the finish line!

We were in charge of handing out medals, water, slicing oranges, and nutrition bars.

Max was super excited to hand out the medals to the finalist. He kept great energy the whole time and it even rubbed off on Brent who was helping at that station.

I was stalking the water table so that it remained FULL the whole time. As soon as someone grabbed a bottle I would put another one down. This kept me busy and awake. Stacking and retrieving big boxes of water bottles gave my arms a good workout.

Jen was slicing oranges and passing them out, like a boss!

It started out slow, but it got busy quickly.

Keep moving, keep warm.

After we were relieved of our shift, we headed to Jen's car to get changed and ready.

We put on our serious OCR clothing and got ready to go. I couldn't find any really good pictures of us during the race, so I put some in here of the obstacles...

To even enter the race you had to jump over a wall. I had to use the side railing to help get up and as I swung my leg over the top I totally kicked Jen...hard. Sorry!

Then we headed onto the course. I have been jogging on the treadmill for a while now and wasn't opposed to jogging, but I told Jen I would stay with her. And the guys stayed with us too, which was slightly unexpected, but nice. It was definitely more fun for me to have the encouragement and watch them do the obstacles. Even though I know Max and Brent could go much faster and harder then Jen and I.

For instance...

Jennifer and I walked around these monkey bar obstacles. Not only did they seem so high in order to even get on them, but then we would need upper body strength..something we both felt that we are currently lacking! NEXT YEAR!

Anyways, Max and Brent were photographed navigating the moving, swinging bars...

Next photos I could find were of the zip line rope. You had to get a good running start and grab on and hopefully swing with enough momentum to get you up the hill, because it was on a sliding incline...needless to say I fell right after I grabbed it....
My muddy hands slipped right over the big knot at the bottom.
I wish he got the splash...I am sure it was epic!

This next obstacle pictured was the one that left Jen and I a little scrapped up and bloody. The BIG slide. We thought we were going to go in deep water, but it was only a few inches deep. Our elbows were dragging on the ground with only a thin tarp like material under us, so we got a little scrapped up. The slight was at a pretty steep incline. I was not a fan of this one. As heights are my least favorite thing. Still, it was super fun.

I loved the bouncy house aspects to this race. Overall if felt very organized and fun the whole time. Even when I was walking around the fire. I know now that I am okay to bring my phone with the water proof case too. So that will help me knowing I can take much more pictures of our endeavors.

All the ropes, crawling, swinging, jumping and climbing was finally over and we were able to enjoy the booths and refreshments. We also found the showers and rinsed off.

We loved it so much we signed up for next year's race right there at one of the booths!
Jen though she saw an elephant ear, but we couldn't find that booth anywhere. We did find a mechanical bull.

Brent and Max took their turn riding the Bull.

Riding the Bull left the guys way more scrapped up and raw than the whole course. I am glad I opted out of the mechanical bull. I just felt too wet and muddy, I thought I would fly right off!

We headed to Jens to rinse off more/change and then eat some lunch. Breanna and Tyler met us at the restaurant and joined in the fun.
We then took Max home and rested the rest of the day!

This is definitely something I can see us doing as a "couple" activity. Brent is in better shape and way more competitive than me...but I am working on fitness this school year and will hopefully be able to do a little more than we did last year.

Even if Jen and I break off and do our own thing, it really was fun sticking together and cheering each other on. That's the problem with competitive people, sometimes they miss the fun of the journey, trying so hard to get to the end.

Man we look good dirty!

The next race that we were signed up for (besides the Bubble Run) was the terrain race in Sherwood. This race we were going to be doing with three of our four boys!

We were super excited to hopefully be starting a tradition that can incorporate the boys too!

We didn't arrive as early for this race, and our heat was not until 10:15.

When we got there we went to check in a bag with the towels and stuff, but they wanted to charge $5 to check the bag. We opted against paying another fee, and walked the bag back to the car. On the way Brent ran into a friend he hasn't seen in awhile. Small World!!

Anyways the boys were all amped up. As soon as the buzzer buzzed Mitch and Bray took off. Brayden was determined to show up Mitchel.

So, Brent, August, and I stuck together....

standing in line at the first obstacle

This race was super fun and I dare say a lot muddier than the Rugged Maniac. I still had more fun on the Rugged Maniac race though. For instance, this race had about 4 or 5 walls. On one of the first smaller walls I got a fairly good running jump and landed square under my rib cage. I ended up with a nice linear bruise across my torso and I was DONE with walls for the  rest of the race. They just kept getting higher! People were great and willing to hoist you up. The different levels of ages and fitness always impress me at these events too!

August had a blast and I could see which obstacles he had never even been exposed to...like climbing a rope or walking in waist deep mud.

Bray and Mitch were waiting by the finish line!

My bib versus Brent's bib...was he even in this race?

That night I had to ice my knees. They were so sore
So, I guess this is something we can do together. I have thoroughly enjoyed these races and the time I have spent with Brent. It is nice to cheer each other on and help push each other through things that otherwise would seem very difficult.
